Patients

Doctor performing general anesthesia in an office or hospital

Prior to Your Procedure

NPO guidelines:

  • Do not eat any food after midnight on the night prior to your scheduled procedure.
  • After mid-night, you may drink clear liquids; water or apple juice, up to 2.5 hours prior to your procedure.
  • You will be NPO (meaning nothing by mouth) for 2.5 hours before your procedure. You may not drink any liquids for the 2.5 hours prior to your procedure.

Illness:

  • It is rare for a patient to be cancelled for respiratory illness. A runny nose or mild cough is not a concern, but it is important for your anesthesiologist to know about it.
  • A patient is usually only cancelled if they have a high fever, or low oxygen saturation.
  • Please contact us for any concerns or questions so that we can discuss your particular situation.

After Your Procedure

Hydration:

  • Drink plenty of liquid following the procedure and the following day.
  • Good hydration helps to prevent nausea.

Concerns or Questions:

  • Please contact our office, and we will connect you with your anesthesiologist or the anesthesiologist director.
